Trump Signs Executive Order to Strengthen America’s AI Leadership

In a bid to solidify America’s position as the global leader in artificial intelligence (AI), U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday, directing the creation of a comprehensive AI action plan.

The plan aims to enhance America’s dominance in the AI field, with a focus on human flourishing, economic competitiveness, and national security.

Trump’s aide, speaking to reporters in the White House’s Oval Office, noted that the initiative seeks to make America the world capital of artificial intelligence.

The executive order mandates a 180-day deadline for the development of the Artificial Intelligence Action Plan. The policy framework will address how the U.S. can maintain and grow its technological leadership, positioning AI as a pivotal force for economic and national security advancements.

At the same time, President Trump has directed his AI adviser and national security assistant to work on dismantling the regulatory framework left by former President Joe Biden concerning artificial intelligence. This marks another step in Trump’s broader effort to reshape policies that he believes may hinder America’s technological growth.

This move came shortly after Trump revoked a 2023 executive order signed by Biden. The original order aimed to mitigate the risks associated with AI, focusing on consumer protection, workforce impacts, and national security.

Under Biden’s directive, AI developers whose technologies could pose a significant risk to national security, the economy, or public health were required to disclose safety test results to the U.S. government before making their systems public. This was in line with the Defence Production Act, designed to protect critical technologies.

Critics of Biden’s approach argued that the regulations might stifle innovation and slow the pace of AI development. In contrast, Trump’s new initiative is seen as a strategic push to remove bureaucratic barriers and fast-track AI advancements in the United States.

The recent actions signal a major shift in U.S. AI policy under the new administration, prioritizing technological progress and economic competitiveness. However, the decision to reverse Biden’s efforts has sparked concerns over potential risks associated with an unregulated AI landscape, particularly concerning national security.
