The Lagos State government is set to commence the enumeration of all communication masts and towers across the state. The initiative aims to enhance regulatory oversight and ensure compliance with infrastructure standards.

The Infrastructure, Maintenance, and Regulatory Agency (LASIMRA) of the state made this statement on Monday.

The initiative, which will be implemented in partnership with the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), is anticipated to last for at least three months, beginning on February 1, 2025, according to a statement signed by Oyekanmi Elegushi, General Manager/Chief Executive Officer, LASIMRA.

The main goal of the exercise is to update the agency’s database with precise and thorough information on all communications, telecoms, radio, television, and security infrastructure in the state, according to LASIMRA, which is in charge of regulating and controlling the installation, maintenance, and laying of network facilities in the state.

The Agency clarified that by detecting and resolving any possible structural or environmental issues related to masts and towers, this endeavour will not only improve regulatory monitoring but also guarantee the safety and well-being of all inhabitants.

“We urge all stakeholders, including telecom operators, broadcasting companies, banks, security companies, property owners and the general public, to cooperate fully with our team of enumerators during the service. Your support is crucial in achieving a safer and more efficient telecommunications landscape in Lagos,” LASIMRA stated.

The enumeration is necessary to identify masts and towers that belong to telecom carriers and other actors in the state, according to Gbenga Adebayo, chairman of ALTON.

According to Adebayo, the exercise is also necessary to determine the condition and strength of all the state’s masts and towers.

TowerCos owned 30,373 of Nigeria’s 39,356 towers as of 2023, while Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) owned 8,983.

According to data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approximately three years ago, Lagos has 5,851 installed towers, the most of any city.

In terms of installed towers, Rivers State had 2,049, while Ogun State had 2,418.

On the list of states with the biggest telecom infrastructure, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of Abuja came in at number four. Oyo and Edo States had 1,713 and 1,556 installed towers, respectively, after it with 1,944 towers.

Additionally, the statistics showed that the states with the least amount of telecom infrastructure nationwide were Kebbi, Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Gombe, Yobe, and Zamfara.
