The Lake Chad Governors’ Forum officially begins today in Maiduguri, Borno State, following an initial announcement by the Yobe State Government a few days ago.

The Vice President of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima, is expected to grace the opening ceremony, further underlining the forum’s significance in fostering regional cooperation and stability.

The three-day event is set to host over 1,000 participants from Chad, Niger Republic, Cameroon, and Nigeria, focusing on regional stability, sustainable development, peace, and security.

Speaking at a pre-Forum press briefing held at the Indimi Hall, University of Maiduguri, the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee and Secretary to the Yobe State Government, Alhaji Baba Mallam Wali, reaffirmed that the event is being hosted by Yobe State in collaboration with the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The forum, which has already commenced with a traditional rulers’ meeting will feature discussions with governors, donor agencies, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and other key stakeholders.

Alhaji Wali emphasized that a robust communication strategy has been put in place to ensure the smooth dissemination of information to the public and stakeholders.

“A media center has been established at the venue to support accredited journalists with regular media briefings and press releases scheduled throughout the event.

“So far, over 850 participants have registered, and we anticipate more than 1,000 attendees. Accommodation and security measures have been fully arranged, while medical support, including clinics and ambulances provided by the University of Maiduguri, has been made available,” Wali stated.

Security operatives have also been deployed to hotels, airports, and major roads such as Maiduguri-Damaturu and Banki-Maiduguri to ensure the safety of participants, particularly those arriving by road.

Additionally, cultural events, a gala night, and a dinner reception will be hosted at the Government House, Maiduguri, which aims to showcase the region’s cultural diversity and highlight achievements within the Lake Chad Basin.

The presence of Vice President Kashim Shettima at the opening ceremony further highlights the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing the region’s security challenges and promoting sustainable development.

The Lake Chad Governors’ Forum remains a critical platform for strengthening regional cooperation and ensuring long-term peace and prosperity in the Lake Chad Basin.
