The Lawmaker representing the Southern Kaduna Senatorial Zone, Senator Sunday Katung, has called on the Federal Government to take immediate measures to protect innocent citizens from terrorist attacks in the region.
In a statement released and signed on Wednesday, Katung condemned the relentless violence that has plagued communities in Kauru, Kachia, Zangon Kataf, Kaura, and Sanga Local Government Areas of Kaduna State, referring to them as “heinous criminality” that has caused significant suffering for the local population.
The Senator’s remarks follows a recent wave of attacks that led to the abduction of 22 locals, mostly women and children, from several communities including Kugauta, Kusheka, Kumana, and Kitanda in Kauru Local Government Area.
Katung emphasized the need for immediate government intervention to stem these brazen acts of terrorism, stating that such violence cannot be allowed to continue unchecked.
Citing Section 14(2)(b) of the Nigerian Constitution, which underscores the importance of security and the welfare of citizens, Katung reiterated his unwavering commitment to safeguarding his constituents.
He revealed ongoing discussions with both the Kaduna State Government and the Chief of Defence Staff to establish a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Kauru and other high-risk areas, with the aim of neutralizing the growing threat.
While acknowledging the dedication of security personnel in their efforts, he urged them to ramp up operations to secure Southern Kaduna and surrounding regions.
He however called upon residents to actively support security agencies by providing vital intelligence that could lead to the apprehension of criminals and their accomplices.
In a message of solidarity, Katung extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the attack victims, assuring them that Southern Kaduna will not be abandoned in its time of need. “This too shall pass,” he said, emphasizing a collective resolve to restore peace and security to the affected region.
