Japan, UNOPS Strengthen Anambra’s Flood Resilience With Emergency Support Initiative

The Government of Japan, in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), in a bold step to bolster climate disaster preparedness in Anambra State, has officially handed over crucial resources aimed at mitigating the impacts of flooding.

The initiative, dubbed “Emergency Support to Climate Change,” was launched in response to the devastating floods that hit the region in 2022.

The support package provided to the Anambra State government includes the donation of ten vehicles to enhance logistical capabilities, three large trucks, and advanced ICT equipment.

Additionally, two GPS water level detector sensors have been installed at strategic riverbank locations to facilitate real-time monitoring and effective responses to potential flooding crises.

During the handover ceremony, the Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria, Mr. Hitoshi Kozaki, reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting Anambra in addressing climate challenges. He emphasized that the intervention aims to save lives and protect property in the region.

In response, Governor Chukwuma Soludo, represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, expressed gratitude to the Japanese Government and UNOPS for their timely assistance.

He noted that these resources would significantly enhance the state’s efforts to safeguard the people of Anambra from the adverse effects of climate-related disasters.

He added that the collaboration will strengthen Anambra’s resilience against future flooding and other climatic issues.
