He noted that the Federal Government, through the NDPC, has domesticated the Data Protection Officer (DPO) certification process, making it more accessible to Nigerians. He urged corps members to take advantage of this initiative, which offers them a pathway into the growing field of data protection and compliance.
During his meeting with Mrs Shokpeka, Dr Olatunji stressed that the NYSC, as a key data controller and processor overseeing over 36,000 corps members currently serving in the FCT, Abuja, must ensure compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA). He called on the NYSC to continuously sensitise corps members on data privacy and the significance of protecting personal information.
In response, Mrs Shokpeka acknowledged the importance of data protection, citing her personal experiences in the field. She proposed a collaboration with the NDPC to develop Data Privacy Champions within the NYSC, reinforcing the scheme’s commitment to data protection and privacy awareness.
By integrating data protection principles into its orientation programmes, the NYSC aims to equip corps members with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the digital landscape securely while also enhancing their career prospects in the rapidly expanding data protection industry.
