FEC Approves Initiatives to Boost Nigeria’s Digital Infrastructure

373

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved two major initiatives designed to enhance Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and establish the country as a leader in artificial intelligence (AI).

These projects represent a significant step forward in the government’s effort to promote inclusivity and innovation within the nation’s digital economy.

Nigeria Universal Communication Access Project

In support of Nigeria’s broader connectivity goals outlined in the infrastructure pillar of the Strategic Blueprint, the FEC has approved the establishment of the Nigeria Universal Communication Access Project. This project, funded through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, is aimed at improving mobile connectivity across underserved and remote regions of the country.

The project will focus on connecting over 21 million people in 4,834 communities that currently lack basic mobile communication access. Many of these communities, especially in rural areas, have been neglected in terms of digital services. The project complements Project Bridge, the government’s ongoing initiative to deploy 90,000 kilometres of fibre optic cable, enhancing broadband coverage and improving digital infrastructure across Nigeria.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, highlighted that expanding mobile connectivity is crucial for improving the quality of life in these underserved areas. By installing additional base stations, the project will bring vital communication services to communities that have previously been left out of Nigeria’s mobile network.

National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Trust

In addition to the connectivity efforts, the FEC has also approved the creation of the National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Trust, a groundbreaking initiative that is set to make Nigeria a leading player in the global AI space. The AI Trust, which will be the first of its kind globally, is designed to guide the development of AI in the country, enabling it to harness AI’s transformative potential for economic growth and development.

The AI Trust will consist of 10 AI experts, along with the Honourable Ministers of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy and Science, Innovation and Technology. Its mandate will include mobilising resources, providing oversight, and guiding AI development across key sectors of the Nigerian economy. This initiative aims to future-proof Nigeria’s investments in AI, ensuring that the country remains competitive in the global tech landscape.

The establishment of the AI Trust underscores Nigeria’s commitment to leveraging AI technology to drive job creation, attract foreign direct investment, and transform key sectors of the economy. By focusing on the strategic development of AI, the government aims to position Nigeria as a major player in the global digital economy.

These approvals are a clear reflection of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration’s commitment to advancing digital transformation in Nigeria. By prioritising both connectivity infrastructure and AI development, the government is taking proactive steps to foster an inclusive digital economy that benefits all Nigerians.

The approval of these projects signifies an important milestone in the nation’s efforts to bridge the digital divide and create an environment conducive to sustainable economic growth, powered by technology and innovation.

These initiatives are poised to improve the lives of millions of Nigerians while positioning the country as a global hub for digital innovation, connectivity, and AI development.
