This initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s efforts to recruit young professionals into the health sector under the National Health Fellows Programme.
The National Health Fellows Programme was approved in January 2025 by President Bola Tinubu and announced by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate.
It aims to engage young Nigerian fellows across all 774 local government areas to strengthen the healthcare system.
Speaking at the committee’s inauguration, the Mandate Secretary of HSES, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, described the initiative as a strategic investment in human resources for health.
She noted that it is part of the Human Capital Opportunity for Prosperity and Equity (HOPE) Programme, which seeks to recruit and train young professionals as key players in the health sector.
In a press release by the Special Assistant (SA) Media, Bola Ajao Dr. Fasawe highlighted the Federal Government’s commitment to upgrading existing Primary Health Care (PHC) centers and establishing new ones.
She emphasized that the FCT Administration, under the leadership of His Excellency Bar. Nyesom Wike, is committed to building a strong healthcare system for Abuja residents.
“The newly recruited fellows will be responsible for monitoring PHC facilities, providing feedback to the government, and assisting in health service delivery. They will also undergo training in leadership, public health, financial management, problem-solving, and monitoring and evaluation”. She said.
The Mandate Secretary urged committee members to conduct a fair and transparent selection process to ensure that only the most qualified candidates are chosen.
The Permanent Secretary of HSES, Dr. Baba Gana Adam, who serves as the committee’s Vice Chairman, praised President Tinubu’s administration for prioritizing healthcare and commended the FCTA for supporting the initiative.
Dr. Kumshida Yakubu Balami, the FCT State Coordinator for the World Health Organization (WHO), explained that the programme operates under the Sector-Wide Action Plan (SWAP) Secretariat in the Office of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare.
She outlined WHO-issued guidelines to ensure smooth coordination, including the establishment of a seven-member selection committee.
Committee members include Dr. Dan Gadzama, Dr. Teresa Nwachukwu (SWAP Desk Officer), Dr. Aderonke Akande, Mrs. Maimuna Abdullahi, and Mr. Danladi Chiya.
The committee is tasked with overseeing the selection process, screening candidates, and submitting a semi-final list to the SWAP Coordinator’s office.
The inauguration of the selection committee marks a major milestone in advancing Nigeria’s healthcare system by fostering a new generation of health leaders and strengthening service delivery nationwide.
