African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador Bankole Adeoye has declared his interest to seek a second term.
Adeoye was first elected into the position of AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace & Security at the 34th AU Summit in February 2021.
Under his leadership, the AU Commission, Political Affairs, Peace and Security department has advanced a transformative agenda for peace, security, and good governance across Africa.
He provided leadership on inclusive, smart partnerships for human security, managing conflicts and countering terrorism, strengthening democracy and good governance, through the instruments of implementing AU institutional reforms towards2063 agenda.
Ambassador Adeoye facilitated the Ethiopia-Tigray Peace process, culminating in the landmark 2022 Cessation of Hostility and sigining of the Agreement.
The Nigerian born diplomat also launched the AU Inter-regional Knowledge Exchange on Early Warning and Conflict Prevention (I-RECKE) that seeks to foster collaboration between regional and international stakeholders on conflict prevention measures.
Prior to his appointment with the AU, he served as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the AU and United Nations Economic Council Agency and Ambassador to Ethiopia, with concurrent accreditation to Djibouti from 2017 to 2020.
Endorsed by the Nigerian government, Amb. Adeoye is seeking reelection on 12-13 February, 2025, to continue his pan-African vision, championing ideas for good governance, peace, and stability towards realising the AU Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want.
