UN Chief Calls for Peaceful Resolution in DRC
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has made a renewed appeal for peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), emphasizing the urgent need for dialogue and humanitarian support in Goma.
His call comes ahead of key summits of the East African Community (EAC), the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council, where leaders will focus on long-term solutions for stability in the Great Lakes region.
Gutierrez highlighted the importance of diplomacy, stating that “there is no military solution” to the conflict and urging all parties to prioritize negotiations.
He welcomed recent ceasefire declarations as a step toward meaningful peace efforts, despite ongoing tensions.
The UN chief reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to protecting civilians and strengthening humanitarian efforts in affected areas.
He also condemned human rights abuses and called for increased international support to address the needs of displaced communities.
Guterres is scheduled to travel to Addis Ababa next week for the AU Peace and Security Council Summit, where leaders will explore strategies to foster peace, stability, and economic development in the region.
His diplomatic efforts reflect a growing international push for lasting peace in the DRC.
