The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra State has held a workshop on tyre safety protocols for members of the Awka South Vulcanizers Union, aimed at reducing road accidents in the state
The FRSC Sector Commander, Joyce Alexander urged vulcanizers to elevate their professional standards to significantly reduce tyre-related road accidents.
Highlighting the vital role that tyre maintenance plays in road safety, Alexander pointed out that many individuals often overlook or delegate the task to those lacking in proper knowledge of tyre safety protocols.
“Tyres are essential components of a vehicle, and understanding the different types, pressure levels, and tread depths is crucial for the safety of drivers, passengers, and all road users.
“By prioritising proper tyre maintenance and advocating for high professional standards, the FRSC hopes to foster a safer driving culture, ultimately reducing the incidence of road traffic crashes in the state,” she stated.
The workshop tackled various pressing challenges faced by vulcanizers, including a shortage of qualified practitioners, substandard repairs, and inadequate regulatory frameworks. In recognition of these issues, Alexander emphasized the necessity for rigorous training and certification programs for vulcanizers to enhance their competencies.
“We are advocating for the implementation and enforcement of established standards for tyre repairs and vulcanizer operations. Collaboration between the FRSC, the Vulcanizer Union, and transport authorities is essential for raising awareness among drivers regarding proper tyre maintenance and the dangers associated with poor repairs,” she added.
During the workshop, Superintendent Route Commander Justin Francis delivered a lecture titled “The Role of Vulcanizers in Reducing Road Traffic Crashes.”
He stressed the link between inadequate vulcanizer services and road traffic accidents, emphasizing the urgent need for improved training and the provision of quality tyre care to enhance road safety.
The FRSC Head of the Technical Service Department, Christy Okonkwo, assured participants that resolutions adopted at the workshop would serve as a foundational framework for improving vulcanizer services statewide.
Additionally, Chukwudi Nwokoye, Chairman of the Vulcanizers Union, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration with the FRSC, aiming to uplift service quality and bolster road safety efforts in Anambra.
