The Minister of State for Works, overseeing FERMA, Bello Muhammad Goronyo has directed the formation of a steering committee to explore alternative funding sources.

The move is to address the financial challenges faced by the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA).

The committee will assess avenues outlined in the FERMA Act to enhance the agency’s ability to monitor and maintain federal roads nationwide effectively.

Goronyo made this announcement at a one-day retreat for the Board and Management of FERMA, themed “Delivering FERMA’s Mandate Aligned to the Renewed Hope Agenda,” held recently in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

He emphasised that “no country relies solely on annual budget allocations to sustain road infrastructure. Thus, the committee will initiate intervention measures to secure additional funding, ensuring the agency fulfills its mandate of maintaining roads for safe and easy public use.”

According to him, “well-maintained roads have significant implications on healthcare, education, security, employment, economic growth, and prosperity.”

The Minister commended the MD/CEO of FERMA, Dr. Emeka Agbasi for his dedication to delivering the agency’s mandate, describing him as a “silent achiever” who has made remarkable progress despite limited resources.

He also acknowledged the efforts of FERMA’s Board Members, urging their continued support for management to ensure federal roads remain good, benefiting citizens and contributing to national economic development.

Goronyo further promised continuous collaboration and synergy between the Federal Ministry of Works, FERMA, and relevant stakeholders to enhance the agency’s operations.

The MD/CEO of FERMA, Dr Emeka Agbasi highlighted the retreat as an opportunity to develop practical solutions to the agency’s challenges in line with best practices.

He stressed the importance of setting clear and measurable goals for the year, aligned with FERMA’s mandate.

According to him, “the scope of the retreat encapsulates an in-depth look into the 8-point agenda of Mr. President.”

He further emphasised the need for the Board and Management to understand their roles in achieving FERMA’s objectives, particularly in addressing funding challenges.

Agbasi reiterated the importance of developing strategies for improved funding, fostering solid communication and relationships between Management and the Board.

He expressed appreciation to Minister Goronyo and Permanent Secretary, Engr. Adebiyi Olusesan Olufunso, for initiating the retreat to tackle critical issues and chart a path toward FERMA’s continuous improvement.
