The Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, has promised to rehabilitate all sports facilities in the state, vowing to turn around the sports sector within the shortest possible time.

Adeleke made the vow while flagging off the remodelling of Osogbo City Stadium to the delight of sports loving residents of Osun State, located in South-Western Nigeria.

The Governor said that his administration had a well articulated sports development agenda, backed by a pragmatic implementation process which would make his vision for the sector come to fruition.

“It gives me great pleasure to stand before my sport loving people of Osun state. On this unique occasion, we are making history,” Governor Adeleke said. “This is a landmark event because Osun had for long suffered lack of standard sporting facilities. Today, our administration is breaking the jinx.”

“When I came in as the governor of the state, this stadium was in terrible condition. The state of sport in Osun was appalling. We therefore decided to do some remarkable things that can boost the development of Sports in the State. “

“One of these remarkable things is what we are witnessing today. This project is not mere renovation but re-development and remodelling of the State Sports Stadium to attain global standard,” he added.

The Governor, who noted that the implementation process of his sport development agenda involved erecting institutional structures, said the legal framework for the creation of Osun Sports Commission was about to be finalised.

Adeleke added that aside from working on infrastructure and policy framework, the welfare of sports men and women in the state would be adequately addressed.

He explained that the remodelling would  extend beyond the main football pitch to three training pitches of International standard, including pitches for other games such as Volleyball, Handball, Hockey, Basketball and a host of others.

“By the time we finish this development, the stadium will be a beautiful edifice to behold,” the Governor added. “Our dream is to build a stadium with capacity to host various sporting events such as the National sports Festival, National Youth Games.”

“And more importantly, to host some of our national teams including Super Eagles in their various continental and International matches. The remodelling will also include a befitting indoor sports hall, hostels for the athletes and a state-of-art 4-star hotel.”

“We build revenue generation into the entire project to ensure sustainability and short and long term viability. We envisage a self – sustaining, holistic sporting infrastructure,” the Governor concluded.
