M23 Rebels Order Displaced Persons To Vacate Bulengo Camp

The sounds of hammering and clattering metal echoed through Bulengo camp in Goma, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, on Tuesday as internally displaced persons began dismantling their shelters.

Residents said M23 rebels, allegedly backed by Rwanda, passed through the camp on Saturday and ordered them to leave within three days.

Just weeks earlier, M23 seized control of Goma, a key city that has long served as a refuge for those fleeing violence. The camps in and around the city house hundreds of thousands of displaced people, many of whom have been forced to relocate multiple times.
