Teachers Receive Training On Safe Space in Kaduna State
The Centre for Girls Education (CGE) in Kaduna State has initiated a training programme for female public school teachers across the 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) to act as mentors in the “Safe Space” initiative.
This programme as part of the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE), aims to support adolescent girls by offering life skills, mentorship, and a safe environment for open communication outside the classroom.
A CGE board member, Mrs Zainab Shuaibu highlighted the importance of providing a space where girls can share personal challenges and gain support, as many teachers face time constraints in the classroom due to a packed curriculum.
The mentors, trained in effective communication strategies, will guide girls through difficult topics and encourage self-expression.
The Deputy Director of Female Education in Kaduna, Aishatu Muhammad emphasised that the training, which also involves principals, is part of a wider effort to improve education for girls. The programme is being expanded to reach more schools, ensuring that more girls benefit from the safe space initiative.
The project also plans to pilot “safe spaces” for boys, focusing on gender-based violence awareness, with male mentors leading the sessions.
This initiative is designed to foster a supportive environment, helping both girls and boys navigate challenges and achieve their potential.
A trained mentor, Aishatu Aminu shared her positive experience with the programme, noting the transformation in girls’ confidence and their ability to openly express themselves. With the expansion of the program, she is committed to mentoring more teachers and ensuring every girl in Kaduna has access to a safe and supportive learning environment.
