Tems Becomes First Female African Artist with 1 Billion Spotify Streams

Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has made history as the first female African artist to surpass 1 billion streams on Spotify. This milestone cements her status as a global music powerhouse, further showcasing the growing influence of African artists on the international stage.

She reached this historic milestone as her collaboration with Future and Drake, Wait For U, recently surpassed 1 billion streams on Spotify. Released in 2022, the track features a sample from Tems’ song Higher, which originally appeared on her 2020 debut EP, For Broken Ears.

The song debuted at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, making Tems the first African artist to achieve a chart-topping debut. Wait For U also earned two nominations at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards—Best Rap Song and Best Melodic Rap Performance—winning the latter.
