By Amina Mohammed, Lafia.
In preparation of the rainy season, the Nasarawa State Government has launched a massive awareness campaign to sensitize flood-prone communities and the general public on the importance of clearing waterways to prevent flooding.
Permanent Secretary (PS), Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Mr. Garba Rosha-Mohammed, stated this while briefing journalists after the February sanitation exercise in Lafia the state capital.
The Permanent Secretary was represented by the General Manager of Nasarawa State Environmental Protection Agency, Mr. Iliyasu Adeka.
The PS said that the steps became imperative because of the prediction by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) as well as the bad experiences of the past where lives and property were lost to flooding.
“We have put machinery on the ground to ensure that communities in flood-prone areas relocate to highlands and the public clear the drains to allow free flow of water”.
“We have engaged the traditional and religious leaders, communities leaders, and we are sponsoring sensitization programs in the mass media to enlighten the public on dangers of flooding and steps to avert it,” he added.
On the February sanitation exercise, the Permanent Secretary expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance by the residents of the state.
He called on members of the public to always keep their environments clean to guard against the outbreak of all diseases.
Secretary of Nasarawa State Waste Management and Sanitation Authority, Christopher Abari, said that the effort was aimed at mitigating the impact of flooding, which has ravaged the state in the past.
He added that their office has provided vehicles to evacuate all waste that was generated and disposed of at designated areas to the final deposing sites.
He assured that the agency would continue to work round the clock to evacuate waste at the designated areas to keep the state clean and guard against outbreaks of diseases.
