NDPC Stresses Need for Data Protection Awareness in Judiciary
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has stressed the need for data protection awareness within the judiciary to safeguard equal rights in data-related matters.
Dr Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner of the NDPC, made this statement during an interview on Tuesday in Abuja.
The NDPC announced in a statement that it has finalised plans to collaborate with the National Judicial Institute (NJI) to strengthen data protection within the judicial system.
The statement, issued by the commission’s Head of Media, Mr Itunu Dosekun, outlined the initiative’s objectives.
Explaining the rationale behind the move, Olatunji stressed that the judiciary must remain well-informed about data protection requirements to prevent injustice in data-related cases.

“We are in an era of disruptive technologies, and a lot of people operate in the digital space. The way one person is treated affects others,” he stated.
“We expect that justice in matters of data protection should be tripartite in nature, ensuring that judgement across the entire spectrum does not infringe upon the rights of others,” he added.
“Decisions regarding the enjoyment of data privacy rights by one citizen have fundamental implications for all citizens,” he emphasised.
Olatunji also noted that countries worldwide are implementing measures to enforce data protection rights, including the establishment of data protection authorities to uphold these laws.
He further stressed that in today’s digital age, protecting the privacy of all citizens remains a top priority.
