The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially launched a five-week Artificial Intelligence (AI) training programme aimed at equipping 6,000 senior secondary school teachers with essential AI knowledge and skills.

The initiative, flagged off by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, who was represented by Hajia Binta Abdulkadir, Director of the Senior Secondary Education Department in the ministry, is a collaborative effort between the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC) and Google Research to enhance digital literacy and transform teaching methodologies across the country.

During the launch in Abuja, Dr Alausa highlighted the growing impact of AI on education, industries, and society, stressing the need to integrate AI into Nigeria’s educational system. He noted that AI-driven pedagogy offers new opportunities for personalised learning, improved teaching efficiency, and enhanced student engagement.

The training, structured into five modules, will run for five weeks through virtual platforms to ensure nationwide participation. Each of Nigeria’s 36 states has been allocated 130 teachers, along with an additional 11 teachers per Federal Unity College, ensuring equitable access to the programme.

Alongside the AI training, the government also unveiled the Minimum Standards for Senior Secondary Education, a policy framework designed to uphold quality education across Nigerian schools. Developed by NSSEC and approved by the National Council on Education, the document sets benchmarks for teaching methodologies, learning resources, and overall school infrastructure.

The Executive Secretary of NSSEC, Dr Iyela Ajayi, called on state governments, school administrators, and private sector stakeholders to support the initiative by investing in digital infrastructure and continuous teacher development. He emphasised that the AI training programme is part of a broader effort to modernise Nigeria’s education sector and bridge the digital divide.

By integrating AI into classrooms, this initiative aims to prepare students for a technology-driven future, equipping them with critical skills needed to compete in the global economy. The training underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging digital transformation for quality education and national development.
