The Filmhouse Group, in partnership with Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) and University for the Creative Arts (UCA), on Wednesday organised a ‘fireside’ chat, aimed to introduce students to career opportunities in the creative industry.

Newsmen reports that the event with the theme, “The Business of Film”, is part of a five-day training to empower the next generation of creative industry leaders.

It explores the intersection of creativity and commerce, providing participants with industry knowledge and hands-on experience in the creative sector.

According to Chioma Ude, founder of AFRIFF, the programme aims to support independent filmmakers in advancing their careers.

Ude said  that AFRIFF was introducing training programmes in fashion, photography and AI to help filmmakers improve their skills and elevate their standards.

These programmes will cater to a wide range of participants, from secondary school students to university students, young filmmakers, and established industry professionals,” she said.

Ladun Awobokun, Chief Content Officer at FilmOne Entertainment, highlighted the significance of building the next generation of filmmakers.

“I love that the focus is not just on film, but the creative sector as a whole, covering fashion, movies, and the arts generally.

“ I think this is very important because it’s building the next generation of filmmakers.”

Awobokun stressed the need for creatives to see their passion as a business.

Getting filmmakers or rather creatives generally to see their passion and what they do as a business and finding ways to monetise and create revenue from it is the next facet of our business.

“The film industry in general is immeasurable, it means that people will now start to see these things as a business,” she said.

Also, Seyi Agboola, Senior Regional Recruitment Manager and representative for the University for the Creative Arts, emphasised the importance of partnerships and training.

We’re here in partnership with AFRIFF, and we’re having the UCA week. We’ve been in partnership with AFRIFF since 2023, and we’re trying to improve and train Nigerian creatives.

“This time, we’re actually doing training in terms of fashion and photography. So, it’s fashion image fashion styling, our photography comes into fashion,” he said.

Agboola highlighted the evolving nature of the creative industry, saying,

The world is changing, and people need to start looking at opportunities within this life.

“We’re enlightening students on the need for hands-on work, and we’ve had some models coming in, stylists, and photographers working on fashion and photography projects.
