The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to revamping cooperative societies and weeding out fake and corrupt ones who steal and scam innocent citizens.

Sen. Aliyu Abdullahi, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, stated this in a statement issued by Mrs Anthonia Eremah, the ministry’s Chief Information Officer, on Friday in Abuja.

Abdullahi stated this at the National Intensive Training workshop for trustees, management committees, and managers of cooperative societies in Nigeria in Kaduna.

He said that the days of fake cooperative societies were gone, adding that measures were being taken to bring sanity to the system.

Abdullahi said that the National Council on Cooperative Affairs would be convened soon to bring synergy, collaboration and partnership with the States’ Cooperative ecosystem

As we embark on the Renewed Hope Agenda for the cooperative sector, we are serious about overhauling the system through our reform and revamp programme.

“We aim to bring innovation by renovating first, revitalising the sector to restore confidence in the masses and bringing back the glory of the cooperative movement,”he said.

He said that the reform and revamp would focus on review and amendments of the Nigeria Cooperative Act to bring it up to date with global best practices and the local realities.

Abdullahi said the revitalisation would also focus on development of regulatory framework to ensure compliance and due diligence in management of cooperatives.

The minister said that the reform would include very robust and all-inclusive human capital development which had already commenced.

He commended the effort of Dr Ibrahim Auwal, the Provost, Federal Cooperative College, Kaduna, as well as the effort of Dr Mohammed Gwaram, Provost, Federal College of Agricultural Produce Technology, Kano.

Abdullahi acknowledged the efforts of the Federal Cooperative Colleges in Ibadan, Oyo State, and in Oji-River, Enugu, for planning the same intensive training workshop for the Cooperative Leaders and Managers in the zones.

Also speaking, Dr Ibrahim Auwal, the Provost, Federal Cooperative College, Kaduna, said the training marked the beginning of a journey that would equip participants with knowledge.

He said it will also equip them with strategies for advancing cooperatives and strengthening the communities they serve.

Auwal said that the knowledge shared would focus on the core principles of cooperative management and the critical skills needed to navigate the challenges and opportunities of a modern economy.
