Nigeria, UK Strengthen Financial and Trade Cooperation

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has embarked on an official visit to the United Kingdom to enhance financial and economic collaboration, with a focus on attracting capital inflows, promoting investment opportunities, and bolstering Nigeria’s financial sector.

The visit highlights Nigeria’s commitment to fostering strategic global partnerships to drive economic growth, innovation, and sustainable development.

According to a statement issued by the Acting Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the minister’s engagements in the UK are expected to strengthen Nigeria-UK relations across various sectors, including trade, investment, technology, media, and academia.

The statement also disclosed that, as part of his itinerary, the Minister is expected to hold bilateral discussions with senior UK government officials.

These discussions will focus on: Enhancing cooperation on security and intelligence-sharing to counter extremism and instability in West Africa, Expanding business and investment opportunities to support Nigeria’s economic growth and job creation, Strengthening collaboration in education, research, and technology between Nigerian and UK academic institutions.

As Nigeria continues to engage proactively on the global stage, the Foreign Affairs Minister added that the visit shows the country’s dedication to ensuring that diplomatic efforts translate into tangible benefits for national security, economic development, and the well-being of all Nigerians.

This visit marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s foreign policy under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, reinforcing his administration’s economic diplomacy, strategic partnerships, and regional security cooperation agenda. Through this working visit, Nigeria aims to consolidate its longstanding relationship with the UK, explore new frontiers for economic growth, and reaffirm its commitment to regional peace and stability.”

The statement noted that the Foreign Affairs Minister will: “Deliver a speech and participate in a discussion at Chatham House on Nigeria’s evolving foreign policy and global aspirations, Attend a high-level roundtable on technology and trade at the House of Commons, where discussions will focus on Nigeria’s economic diversification, investment climate, and digital transformation. Engage with key media stakeholders at the BBC House in London, highlighting Nigeria’s foreign policy priorities and its global positioning.”

In further recognition of Nigeria’s commitment to knowledge exchange, academic partnerships, and capacity building, Ambassador Tuggar will also engage with the African Centre and the University of Cambridge.

The high-level working visit to the United Kingdom starts from 3rd to 5th March 2025, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties and enhance strategic cooperation across key sectors.
