Nigeria to Construct 7,000 Telecom Towers to Boost Rural Connectivity

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to construct 7,000 new telecommunications towers in rural areas to enhance connectivity and bridge the digital divide.

This initiative, approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), aims to provide high-quality telecommunication services to underserved communities across the country.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, emphasised the government’s commitment to ensuring that all Nigerians have meaningful access to reliable telecommunication services. He stated that the focus is not only on expanding coverage but also on improving service quality and user experience.

This development aligns with Nigeria’s broader strategy to advance digital transformation and 5G deployment. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has already issued 5G licences to major operators, including MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, and Mafab Communications, to facilitate this progress.

In support of this initiative, Airtel Africa has pledged a $500 million investment to strengthen Nigeria’s telecommunications infrastructure. This investment is expected to bolster the country’s connectivity, particularly in underserved regions, and contribute to economic growth and digital inclusion.

The government’s plan to build these additional telecom towers is a significant step towards achieving comprehensive digital coverage and ensuring that all Nigerians can benefit from the opportunities provided by robust telecommunication networks.
