Shanahan University, the first university established in Onitsha, Anambra State, recently celebrated its inaugural matriculation ceremony, welcoming 495 pioneer students.

The institution, founded by the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha, marks a significant milestone in the region’s educational development, reinforcing the growing role of private and faith-based universities in Nigeria’s higher education landscape.

The ceremony, held at the Basilica Square of the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Onitsha, featured a homily titled “Going to the Promised Land” by the Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. Valerian Okeke.

In his address, the Archbishop urged students to embrace faith, hard work, and discipline as they embark on their academic journey.

A Vision for Global Excellence

Shanahan University aspires to set new standards in higher education, with a focus on innovation, entrepreneurship, and leadership. Speaking at the event, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Chief Cletus Ibeto, emphasised the institution’s vision of producing graduates capable of excelling on a global scale.

Traditional Ruler and Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, underscored the significance of education as a transformative force, commending the Catholic Church’s continued investment in academic excellence.

Vice Chancellor Rev. Fr. (Prof) Obi Oguejiofor highlighted the university’s rapid expansion, noting that since its launch in October 2024 with 19 academic programs, it has recently added five more programs following an evaluation by Nigeria’s National Universities Commission.

Bridging Educational Gaps

The establishment of Shanahan University reflects a broader trend across Africa, where private and faith-based institutions are playing an increasing role in bridging educational gaps.

With an emphasis on creativity, innovation, and holistic learning, the university aims to equip students with skills that align with the demands of a rapidly evolving global economy.

Inspired by the biblical passage John 10:10, the university’s motto underscores its commitment to providing students with a well-rounded education that prepares them for success beyond the classroom.

“Shanahan University is poised to make a significant impact, not only in Nigeria but globally,” the Vice Chancellor stated.
