213

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has taken a significant step in advancing digital education in Nigeria by deepening collaboration with Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK).

This move was formalised during a meeting between the Director General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa, and the Vice Chancellor of NSUK, Professor Sa’adatu Hassan Liman.

The discussions centred on enhancing cooperation in key technological areas, including Digital Literacy, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Research & Development (R&D). Recognising the critical role of technology in shaping the future, both institutions agreed to formulate a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to guide their collaborative efforts.

Commitment to Digital Literacy

NITDA has been at the forefront of integrating digital literacy into Nigeria’s education system. This partnership aligns with the agency’s broader initiative to embed digital literacy as a general course across all universities in collaboration with the National Universities Commission (NUC). The goal is to achieve 70% digital literacy by 2027 and 95% by 2030, equipping Nigerian students with essential skills for the digital economy.

In November 2024, NSUK reinforced its commitment to digital transformation by launching the Digital Learning for NSUK (DL4NSUK) initiative in partnership with NITDA and Cisco. This programme has positioned the university as a pioneer in implementing technology-driven learning solutions in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

Driving Innovation Through AI and R&D

Beyond digital literacy, the partnership will focus on advancing research in AI and fostering innovation in R&D. With AI playing an increasingly vital role in various sectors, both organisations aim to develop initiatives that will enhance knowledge, capacity building, and the application of AI in academia and industry.

Speaking at the meeting, NITDA Director General Kashifu Inuwa reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to fostering technological advancement through strategic partnerships. Professor Sa’adatu Hassan Liman also expressed her enthusiasm about the collaboration, emphasising its potential to transform the university into a hub for digital excellence.

Formalising the Partnership

To institutionalise the collaboration, NITDA and NSUK will work on finalising an MoU that will outline specific areas of cooperation, implementation strategies, and expected outcomes. This agreement is expected to facilitate knowledge sharing, curriculum development, and the adoption of cutting-edge technologies in NSUK’s academic programmes.

As Nigeria continues its digital transformation journey, this partnership represents a crucial step towards equipping students with future-ready skills, ensuring that the country remains competitive in the global digital landscape.
