The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has dismissed circulating social media reports claiming that subsidies for antiretroviral (ARV) drugs have been withdrawn, labeling the information as false and misleading.

Director-General of NACA, Dr. Temitope Ilori, clarified in a statement on Sunday that HIV treatment in Nigeria remains free at government-approved health facilities. She debunked claims that ARV drugs would now cost ₦250,000 per dose, with patients required to pay ₦500,000 monthly.

“There has been no withdrawal of funding or support from the US government, USAID, or the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding HIV treatment in Nigeria,” Ilori emphasised.

She acknowledged the continuous support of donor agencies, including the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the Global Fund, in ensuring free access to treatment.

Ilori reaffirmed NACA’s commitment to maintaining uninterrupted HIV treatment and urged the public to disregard misinformation that could cause unnecessary panic. She warned against the spread of unverified reports, stressing that misleading claims could hinder efforts to combat HIV/AIDS in the country.

“We encourage Nigerians to rely on verified sources for health-related information. NACA remains committed to ensuring that no person living with HIV is denied access to life-saving treatment due to misinformation or fear,” Ilori stated.

She advised the public to visit NACA’s official website or follow its verified social media platforms for accurate and up-to-date information on HIV treatment and prevention.
