Police, Stakeholders Discuss Safe Schools Initiative In Kano State

The Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun said “the safe schools initiative was designed to ensure safety of students in educational institutions.”

Represented by Assistant Inspector General of Police AIG Zone 1 Ahmad Ammani, the IGP said “the Police is committed to working tirelessly in collaboration with other security agencies in achieving the desired goals.”

Egbetokun explained that “the Police will use modern technology and intelligence led Policing to ensure proactive law enforcement around schools.”

He said; “The Key objectives of this forum are to identify and address security threats to schools, strengthening partnership between the Nigeria Police, Educational Institutions and host Communities, develop effective strategies for preventing and responding to security incidents and promote a culture of security awareness and responsibility among students, teachers and the wider Community.”

“As part of this initiative training programs will be instituted for educators, administrators and security personnel who will in turn leverage on the skills to respond to security threats. 

“The safe schools is where the culture of safety for our students, teachers, staff and our community at large is ensured, “ the Police boss said.

Also speaking, the State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf expressed the commitment of his administration in ensuring that, the desired support on the safe school initiatives is attained.

He said his Government has implemented various measures to ensure that schools in Kano are protected including the deployment of security personnel.

Governor Yusuf said: “Education is the bedrock of every development, and security is essential for learning.”

He informed the IGP of several interventions and initiatives to Education including the declaration of state of emergency on the sector as well as increase in the education budget to 31 percent.

He said; “We believe that, every child deserves access to quality Education regardless of their background or circumstances.”

The Governor was represented by the Commissioner of Education Ali Makoda.

The National Coordinator School Protection Squad Force Headquarters, Commissioner of Police Abayomi Segunle said the objectives includes to strengthen security resilience and integrate host Communities into the security architecture in the protection of education.

He noted that the launched of the safe school enables children affected by insecurity to continue education unhindered.

Segunle explained that “the system was designed to have a durable outcome such as reducing out of school children and in the long run provide guidance and the framework for ensuring save and secured learning environment in schools nationwide.”

The Nigerian government in collaboration with States, local government and critical arms of government developed a mid-time national plan on financing safe school,” he said.

Commander 3 Brigade Kano Brig. Gen Ahmad Muhammed Tukur commended the Safe Schools initiatives introduced by the Nigerian Police assuring the readiness of the army for Synergy and support.

Many stakeholders who spoke lauded the police for the safe schools initiatives calling for all Nigerians to support the initiative.
