Women in Ebonyi State have called for concerted efforts to eliminate barriers hindering their economic and social progress.

Gathering at the Women Development Centre in Abakaliki to mark this year’s International Women’s Day, IWD, women from politics, academia, markets, and social groups, led by the state’s First Lady, Mrs. Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, used the occasion to highlight challenges affecting their socio-economic well-being.

Mrs. Nwifuru identified key issues such as gender inequality, limited access to education for girls, economic disempowerment, gender-based violence, and low female political representation.

She called for urgent, collaborative action involving her BERWO Foundation, the government, and civil society organisations to dismantle these barriers.

The first Lady said; “IWD is not just a day of celebration; it is a reminder of the struggles women have faced and continue to face. While women in Ebonyi have made significant contributions, gender disparities persist, demanding immediate action.”

Reflecting on the 2025 IWD theme, “Accelerate Action,” Mrs. Nwifuru stressed the need for swift and decisive measures to close gender gaps in education, healthcare, leadership, entrepreneurship, and technology.

For years, women have advocated for equal opportunities. Now, we must move from advocacy to action, from discussions to implementation,” she added.

The Deputy Governor, Mrs Patricia Obila reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to advancing women’s empowerment through sustained policies and programmes.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Child Development, Mrs. Felicia Nwankpuma noted that “while women were previously underrepresented, recent initiatives have significantly improved their inclusion.”

This year’s IWD theme, “Accelerate Action,” underscores the urgency of breaking systemic barriers and ensuring a more inclusive society for women and girls.
