Arrangements have been concluded to confer three highly acclaimed Nigerians with the Emeritus Professor title at the 37th convocation ceremony of the University of Calabar, Calabar, Cross River State, southern Nigeria.
The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Florence Obi, who made the announcement during a press briefing in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, said that the three Nigerians were selected for the investiture due to their immense contribution to the growth of education in the country.
Professor Obi also disclosed “the investiture of Emeritus Professor on 3 highly acclaimed professors of the University of Calabar, whose intellectual contributions to their disciplines and the institution are widely acknowledged.
“The decision to accord them this special recognition has been endorsed by the Senate of the institution. The recipients of the award are the former Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Lafia and the former Cross River University of Technology, Professor Ekanem Ikpi Braide of the Faculty of Biological Sciences.
“The others include Professor Eme Effiom Osim of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences and the former Head of the Theatre Arts Department and university orator, Professor Chris Nwamuo in the Faculty of Arts,” she stated.
According to the Vice Chancellor, six prominent Nigerians would be conferred with Honourary doctorate degrees for their landmark contributions, which has “shaped the landscape and impacted lives in service to the motherland.
“The wife of Nigeria’s Senate President, Mrs. Ekaette Unoma Godswill Akpabio with a Degree in Educational Management; the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, the former governor of River State, Nyesom Wike and the governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu would receive a degree each in Political Science.”
Others she stated include, “the retired Major General Moses Bisong Obi would be awarded a degree in Peace and Conflict Studies; the Honourable Justice Emmanuel Akomaye Agim will receive from the faculty of Law and Prince Arthur Eze will be conferred with Business Management degree.”
Graduation
She also stated that the award ceremony formed part of activities lined up for the 50th anniversary celebration of the University of Calabar besides the 37th convocation, which would feature the graduation of more than 13 thousand students.
Obi, who disclosed that Saturday 22nd March 2025 was billed for the award of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Degrees, said, “Friday, March 21, 2025, has been set aside for the Award of Masters, First Degrees, and Diplomas. These graduates would also be inducted into Unical Alumni.”
She continued, “A total of 13,786 students are expected to be part of this convocation ceremony. A breakdown shows that the Diplomas students are 181 in number, First Degrees 11,725, Masters Degrees 876, and Ph.D 572. Post Graduate Diploma 249 and Postdoctoral Diploma in Education 7 as well as more from our Top-Up programme.
“Further breakdown shows that 66 would be awarded First Class. This is also the first since the establishment of this institution for us to be graduating these numbers of first-class degrees. 3,054 students have Second Class Upper Division, 7,450 made Second Class Lower Division, while 925 got Third Class and 7 Pass.”
While the weeklong celebration commenced with a fun-filled road show within the campus, she hinted that other activities would be a science exhibition, commissioning of projects, and convocation lecture as well as alumni dinner.
