The National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Bauchi State chapter has stressed the importance of menstrual health and hygiene education for women and girls in rural communities.

They made the call at a one-day sensitisation training for adolescent girls, organised in partnership with the Bauchi Field Office of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), to commemorate the 2025 International Women’s Day on Tuesday in Bauchi.

The State Chairperson of NAWOJ, Mrs Rashida Yusuf highlighted the significance of empowering girls with knowledge on managing their menstruation confidently and hygienically.

This, she believed, would not only enhance their physical well-being but also boost their dignity and self-esteem.

Yusuf noted that, “Many girls faced menstrual challenges in schools, including difficulties in accessing hygiene products.”

She stressed that access to menstrual hygiene products remained crucial for healthy living, well-being, and dignity.

A health sector worker, Mrs  Murjanatu Mohammed in a health talk to the adolescent girls,  stressed the importance of hygiene among women, particularly adolescent girls.

She said that, “Proper menstrual hygiene remained essential for the health and well-being of women and girls, preventing infections and supporting their participation in education and daily activities.”

Mohammed suggested to the adolescent girls to adopt the use of reusable sanitary pads,  which she said  is cheaper than the normal pads
She also advised them  to use the salt and ash solution in order to keep clean, healthy and hygienic.

Responding on behalf of the participants,  Jamila Mohammed thanked NAWOJ for organising the training,

“We never  had  such training on menstrual hygiene in this community. We are happy that  training of this nature is taking place here.

“Menstruation is something that people hardly talk about. We are seeing the men of this community, traditional leaders supporting this kind of sensitisation, honestly it is a blessing for us,” she  said.
