Google Wallet Introduces Parental Controls for Children’s Payments

280

Google has announced the rollout of new parental controls for Google Wallet, enabling supervised children to make in-store payments and manage digital passes on their Android devices.

The update, which will be available in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Spain, and Poland, aims to provide a secure and controlled digital payment environment for young users.

Key Features of the Update

With this new feature, children with parental consent can now use Google Wallet for tap-to-pay transactions at retail stores. Additionally, the update allows kids to store and access supported digital passes, such as event tickets, library cards, and gift cards, directly within the app.

Parents can manage their child’s Google Wallet usage through the Google Family Link app, offering controls such as:

  • Approving or removing payment cards
  • Monitoring transaction history
  • Disabling wallet access if necessary
  • Receiving purchase notifications via email for every transaction

Restrictions and Security Measures

To ensure safe usage, Google Wallet for kids does not support online purchases, limiting transactions to in-store payments only. Additionally, parents must set up the Wallet app on their child’s Android device, verify payment cards, and manage permissions via Google Family Link.

Google’s Response to Digital Payment Trends

Google’s introduction of kid-friendly payment options aligns Google Wallet with competing services such as Apple’s Apple Cash Family, which also allows supervised payments for younger users. By integrating robust parental controls, Google aims to make digital payments more accessible and secure for families.

The feature is expected to roll out gradually over the next few weeks.
