As part of efforts to enhance electricity supply and support sustainable development, the Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has launched the first phase of distributing 500 electrical transformers to all 44 local government areas of the state.

Speaking at the official flag-off ceremony in Kano, Governor Yusuf reiterated his administration’s commitment to revitalising the state’s power infrastructure and expanding access to electricity in both rural and urban areas.

According to the governor, the initial batch of 250 transformers, with varying capacities of 500 kVA, 300 kVA, and 200 kVA, will be distributed based on the specific energy needs of each community.

“These transformers are intended to replace faulty units and energise communities that have endured long periods of darkness,” Governor Yusuf stated, also highlighting ongoing projects aimed at improving power generation in the state, including the near-completion of the 10 MW Tiga Hydro Power Plant and the 6 MW Chalawa Gorge Hydro Power Plant.

“I am proud to announce that power evacuation from the Tiga project has already begun. These efforts are a testament to our administration’s vision of achieving energy self-sufficiency.

When completed, the Chalawa Plant will further enhance power availability for industries, agriculture, and households,” he said.

Vandalism

On the issue of vandalism, the governor issued a strong warning, directing all 44 local government chairmen to establish Transformer Protection Committees in all 484 wards to safeguard the facilities.

“Vandalism, theft, and sabotage are enemies of our collective progress. We must protect these assets for the benefit of our communities,” he emphasised.

Speaking at the event, the State Commissioner for Rural and Community Development, Abdulqadir Abdussalam, noted that improved electricity access will significantly boost local economic activities.

Similarly, the Commissioner for Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs, Tajjudeen Uthman, praised the governor for various developmental projects across local councils, including road construction, agricultural initiatives, and education programmes.

The Managing Director of Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), Dr Abubakar Shuaibu, pledged the agency’s full support in ensuring the smooth installation and operation of the distributed transformers.
