The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in partnership with the World Bank Group, has launched a training programme on Emergency Preparedness and Response (EP&R) for stakeholders in Kebbi State.

The initiative aims to strengthen disaster risk reduction and response capacity in the state.

The Director-General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, said Kebbi was selected as one of the pilot states for the project due to its vulnerability to flooding.

She noted that ,”predictions indicate possible flooding in low-lying areas of the state due to heavy rainfall and water releases from upstream dams.”

Umar explained that the project seeks to establish robust EP&R structures in all local government areas, develop a comprehensive database of volunteers, and advocate for the inauguration of Local Emergency Management Committees (LEMCs).

She commended Governor Nasir Idris for his support of disaster management efforts in the state.

Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris reaffirmed his commitment to supporting programmes that safeguard lives and property.

He emphasised the importance of disaster management in the state’s development agenda and pledged to work with NEMA, the World Bank, and other partners to mobilise resources and strengthen institutions.

The two-day workshop brought together stakeholders, including security agencies, SEMA officials, community leaders, and government representatives.

The training is expected to provide a platform for discussion, knowledge sharing, and the development of strategies to enhance disaster preparedness and response in the state.
