The 42nd Commissioner for Police has resumed duty in Cross River State, south-south Nigeria.

He is Aminu Alhassan and takes over from Sikiru Akande, who has been redeployed to the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja after a duty tour of six months.

During a brief handover ceremony held at the Cross River State Police Command headquarters in Calabar, Alhassan promised to consolidate on the achievements of the outgone commissioner.

Consolidating security achievements

He promised that together with the support of officers and men, he would discharge his responsibility with the utmost efficiency and professionalism.

“I am here with a plan and mandate to consolidate on the successes of the outgoing Commissioner for Police. I must make use of his foundation to build and grow from there,” said Alhassan.

He stated, “we will continue to team up and work with the good people of Cross River. I will ensure that every policeman performs his duty so that every citizen will sleep with their eyes closed. I want to assure the people that we (police) will not rest on our oars as we promise to give our very best.”

Successful community policing

Earlier, the outgone Police Commissioner Akande expressed gratitude to the officers and men of the command as well as the people for the cooperation accorded him in the past months.

Akande noted that the Nigerian President’s initiative on community policing was implemented in the state, which had recorded huge successes.

“I sincerely thank the people of the state for making my tenure a successful one. Please do not drop our watchword: when you see something, say something. When you say something, be assured of the police response promptly,” he said.

“Words alone cannot express my gratitude for the bond that made this journey a successful one. Jointly we brought crime to the lowest level in this region,” Akande noted.

He further stated, “community policing is the programme of the President and it for the police to partner with the community to achieve success. That is why we were deployed to guarantee the peace and security of the state.”

The outgone Police Commissioner suggested that state command should be funded directly from the federation account, adding “the moment proper funding is done, all security challenges would be promptly tackled.”
