The Anambra State Government has renewed its call for families to take a more active role in HIV prevention by encouraging regular discussions on testing, treatment and preventive measures within homes and communities.
The Executive Director and Project Manager of the Anambra State AIDS Control Agency (ANSACA), Dr. Nkem Okeke, said achieving sustained control of HIV requires the collective commitment of families, community leaders, schools, religious institutions and the media, alongside government interventions.
According to him, “creating an environment where HIV is openly discussed at home will encourage more people to undergo regular testing, seek timely treatment and help reduce stigma associated with the disease.”
He noted that parents and guardians have a critical responsibility in educating young people about HIV prevention and healthy lifestyle choices, while community stakeholders should intensify awareness campaigns to curb new infections.
Okeke reaffirmed ANSACA’s commitment to strengthening partnerships and expanding public education initiatives aimed at reducing HIV transmission.
He said that “the agency would continue to ensure that people living with HIV have access to quality healthcare, treatment and support services.”
Okeke also encouraged residents of Anambra State to know their HIV status through routine testing and to actively support ongoing efforts to eliminate HIV as a public health threat in the state and throughout Nigeria.
