As Nigeria marks the 2021 International Day of the Girl Child, Stakeholders have been called upon to bridge the technology gap and provide digital innovation for girl child empowerment,
A Non – Governmental Organization (NGO) known as Health Aid for all Initiative in collaboration with Global Glow made the call at a summit to mark the with Girls Students in Government Secondary Tudun Wada Abuja.
According to the Executive Director of Health Aid for All Initiative, Dr Ugochi Ohajuruka, the core objective is to make girls an active part of the progress of the world.
She said that “It is important for girls to be empowered in many aspects. Girls in Africa are left behind in the area of technology and it’s important to bridge the Digital divide”.
“The summit is important to catch the young students early for them to know the relevance of acquiring knowledge for a better future.” Dr Ugochi noted.
Also, a Volunteer Mentor, Mrs Katheryn Brennan from Ireland, said, “Summit is about encouraging the girl child to have access to technology, science, engineering and mathematics as well as how to overcome the challenges the girl child.”
She noted that several topics were discussed with the students on how to build them for the better.
The Principal Government Secondary Tudun Wada Abuja Mr Ogunsakin Abiodum advocated for more support from individuals to complement government efforts in the provision of technology-based facilities for the education of the girl child.
The International Day Of The Girl Child is a day dedicated by the United Nations to create awareness to the growth of girls around the world.
The day is also to make a clarion call on the inequality against the girl child in areas such as access to education, nutrition, legal rights, medical care, and protection from discrimination, violence against women, forced child marriage and above all technology and digital space.
The theme for the 2021 International Day of the Girl Child is “Digital Generation, Our Generation,” acknowledging the growing digital world and how a digital gap can also widen the gender gap.
