A group in Nigeria, the Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society has flagged off a training programme on digital skills aimed at empowering two thousand youths in eight states.
The Executive Director of the group, Imam Fuad Adeyemi announced this while flagging off the training programme in Abuja.
According to him, the training is funded by A. John D, Catherine T, and McArthur foundation.
“My desire is to empower the selected youths with digital skill, monitor and nurture them to be self-reliant for a better generation.
“The two thousand youths are to be drawn from eight states of FCT, Lagos, Osun, Kebbi, Kaduna, Kogi, Sokoto, and Enugu with similar sensitization training will be held in the selected states.”
Imam Adeyemi told the youths, “You all must maximize the potentials available through the internet. Even if you do not have a laptop, you can use your phone which is today, a source of wealth, to achieve a lot and you can become a model to your peers,” he said.
He explained that, “It will be the youth and upcoming leaders of Nigeria who will transform this country and free the country from the shackles of corruption which is threatening to break the country.”
A software engineer, Mr. Umar Frouq who was a guest lecturer at the event spoke on the topic; “Exploring opportunities in digital skills for development.”
He identified ITC as the best environment for digital entrepreneurship urging the participants to maximize the opportunity and boost Nigerian’s economy.
He tasked participants to get themselves knowledge in skills that would enhance their profile in their chosen careers.
“What we are doing is to enlighten youths in a digital world so that they are not left behind. They should enhance their horizon, rather than wasting their time on their digital devices, meanwhile, they are revenue generating devices through legitimate means.”
He urged youths to take advantage of the limitless opportunities provided by the internet adding that “Globally, youths are the CEOs of tech companies because at this stage, you have the energy, creativity and time to explore.”
Some of the participants expressed happiness with the training and the willingness to develop further.
The 30 participants in the first phase of the training in Abuja, have opened a LinkedIn profile and began the process of opening their own websites and blogs as a first step.
