The Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, at the State House in Abuja said the Super Eagles of Nigeria cannot afford to miss out in participating at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar as he shed more light on the importance of qualification.
The Super Eagles progressed to the play-off round of the Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers after picking up a point against Cape Verde in their 1-1 draw at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, thereby preserving its place at the top of the Group C table.
The Super Eagles may face either Ghana, Egypt, Cameroon, Mali or DR Congo for a place at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
“I want to believe that everything should be done to ensure that Super Eagles qualify for the World Cup,” Minister Dare said.
“When the FIFA President came visiting President Muhammadu Buhari here, I recall he said ‘Mr. President, see you in Qatar.’”

The Minister similarly noted in clear words that no decision had been made on Super Eagles Coach Gernot Rohr, contrary to rumours circulating round about his dismissal. In his bid to ensure adequate measures are taken in tackling the situation, Dare urgently directed the NFF to present Rohr’s report card to the Ministry.
“Until the NFF present the report of the performance of the coach to the Ministry, there will not be a decision on whether to sack or allow him continue on the job, because we are interested in knowing how well or bad the coach has performed since he was given the task of leading the Super Eagles,“ Dare told journalists.
Rohr was appointed in 2016, signed a contract extension in May, 2020 but has faced several criticisms following Nigeria’s unconvincing performances in recent outings.
