One of Nigeria’s opposition parties, African Action Congress (AAC) has called on the Anambra State Governor, Professor Charles Soludo, urging him to take immediate and decisive action against the escalating insecurity in the state.
During a press conference in Awka, the state capital, AAC State Chairperson Comrade Chioma Ifemeludike expressed concerns over the alarming levels of violence and kidnapping that have plagued the region for over three years.
Ifemeludike emphasised that the situation has deteriorated to a point where citizens are afraid to travel or are forced to take precautions, such as disguising their identities for safety.
“The security situation has sunk to such depths that many are living in fear, with people resorting to begging while traveling to their communities. This is unacceptable. We cannot continue to watch our people perish daily,” she said.
The party accused Governor Soludo of paying mere lip service to the crisis, highlighting that the state’s declared state of emergency has not led to any significant improvements in security.
“Anambra, known as the light of the nation, is struggling under the shadows of insecurity and terror. Lives are being wasted unnecessarily due to the government’s inaction,” she lamented.
Ifemeludike further pointed out that the ongoing violence, including cult killings and rampant kidnappings, was crippling local businesses and the overall economic environment.
She called on all citizens, alongside the AAC, to unite and reclaim ownership of their security.
Social Media Campaigns
The party plans to initiate a series of social media campaigns aimed at mobilising the populace to combat crime and restore safety.
“We will not retreat from confronting those who threaten our peace. We will utilize every means at our disposal, including protests and social media, to ensure that our voices are heard and that urgent actions are implemented,” she stated.
She stressed that the relentless attacks have inflicted suffering on the physical, financial, and psychological well-being of the people.
“The mental state of Ndi-Anambra is of utmost concern to us. We will do everything within our power to ensure the safety of our citizens,” she stated.
The AAC State Chairman further affirmed that the AAC was resolute in its demand for proactive measures from the governor.
She added that addressing insecurity was essential for the growth and development of Anambra State.
