The Al-habibiyyah Islamic Society has held a Ramadan Lecture to create awareness and educate Women on how to give out zakat (alms giving) as one of the Pillars of Islam.

The Guest Lecturer of the event, Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulmuminu in his paper presentation explained the conditions of giving Zakat, who to give Zakat, when to give Zakat and how to give Zakat.

He noted that Islam has not made exception on women not to participate in giving out zakat.

According to Mallam Abdulmuminu, Zakat is an annual alms tax that each Muslim is expected to pay as a religious duty and that is used for charitable and religious purposes,

“Islam has made it compulsory on men and women to give out zakat if the necessary conditions are complete , that is the giver must be a Muslim, the wealth must be free from debt, the wealth must reach its minimum amount also the Wealth must be complete one year lunar calendar.

“Zakat is based on income and the value of possessions, the common minimum amount for those who qualify is 1/40 of a Muslim’s total savings and wealth, no zakat is required when someone’s personal wealth falls below the threshold during a lunar year

“When Allah the Almighty imposed Zakat on Muslims in the Holy Qur’an the conditions of giving out did not exempted women, they are to pay like men as long as the conditions of giving out are complete.”

One of the organisers of the lecture, Mrs Rafat Salami explained that the aim of the lecture is to educate people especially women on how to give out Zakat.
