Abuja Run Club holds city-wide race

The Abuja Run Club – ARC or ARCers – organized a 10km and 21km race(s) in Abuja as part of its efforts to build unity and encourage physical fitness.

This year’s theme was run well well in your mind, body and community.

It was an opportunity for residents, irrespective of age, ethnicity, religion, backgrounds to come together and run, as well as feel empowered and embrace the spirit of success through completion.

All  participants in the marathon walked away with medals for completing the course, while the participants who came in first, second and third, walked away with cash prizes.

Ekanem said he established the club because he couldn’t find a club he wanted to run in. He said individuals do not like to run alone, so it only made sense to create a community around running.

A fitness culture was vital because we live in a fast-paced world that revolves around mostly social media, which gives a false sense of reality, however being able to engage in a physical activity such as running; you can bring your body into the present and enjoy the moment, ”he said.

The idea to give out cash prizes is empowering and encouraging to individuals and also a way for the club to practice having experience points. The run club meets every Saturday and Tuesday to practice, coming together also encourages safety, as the club members also look out for one another.”

He added that building the run club community was important because it also aids personal growth.

Group fitness classes are fantastic opportunities to meet like-minded individuals who share your fitness interests. These classes provide a sense of camaraderie, as you work toward your fitness goals together. Don’t be shy about introducing yourself and striking up conversations with your fellow participants,” Ekanem added.

Friendship

One of the beautiful aspects of the fitness culture is its inclusivity.

Regardless of  age, background, or fitness level, there is a definitely place everyone.

For Swiss national Sandra, the Abuja run exemplifies the core principle of inclusivity. And indeed, the efforts of the fifty-year old were rewarded with a third-place finish in the 21km run as well as N50,000 cash award.

Having a fitness culture is important because health is important and we must look after it; in her opinion, running is one way to do it.  My medal is a symbol of having a good time and to show I achieved something.”

 Many fitness centres and groups are designed to cater to diverse populations, offering classes and programs tailored to different needs and abilities.

 It’s fun to run with people and it’s more exhilarating compared to running alone,” said Mark Amaza, who participated in the 10K run.

After running, I walked away feeling good, so I will take partake in the 21k run before the year runs out. The lifestyle of fitness is one to get into as you age because it motivates a culture of discipline and it’s all positives and no negatives,” he added.

By finding fitness passion, connecting with like-minded individuals, and embracing the inclusivity of fitness, individuals can build meaningful friendships, a supportive community, and a lifelong commitment to their well-being. Fitness knows no age limits; it’s a journey of personal growth and connection that can continue to flourish at any stage of life.

And that is what the Abuja Run Club is all about!
