The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has urged Governor of Anambra State, South East Nigeria, Professor Charles Soludo, to urgently reconsider the one-week closure of Onitsha Main Market, warning that the decision is already causing severe economic disruptions nationwide.

In a letter dated January 27, 2026, ACCI President, Dr Emeka Obegolu, described the closure as a measure with far-reaching consequences for traders, supply chains, and dependent businesses across Nigeria.

“Onitsha Main Market remains one of West Africa’s largest commercial hubs, serving as a critical artery for interstate trade, manufacturing inputs, consumer goods distribution, and livelihoods for millions of Nigerians,” Obegolu said.

While acknowledging the Anambra State Government’s efforts to end the Monday sit-at-home practice, the chamber stressed that the temporary shutdown has imposed immediate hardship on traders and small businesses.

“The temporary closure, while intended to enforce compliance and deter economic sabotage, has unfortunately triggered immediate and severe hardships for thousands of traders, small and medium enterprises, transporters, and dependent families,” the ACCI President stated.

According to the chamber, businesses operating on thin margins are already grappling with inventory disruptions, rising costs, and the spoilage of perishable goods.

“Reports indicate disruptions to inventory flows, increased costs, potential spoilage of perishables, and ripple effects on businesses in Abuja, Lagos, and other commercial centres that source goods from Onitsha,” the letter noted.

The ACCI Boss warned that continued restrictions on economic activity in the South-East could deepen losses already running into billions of naira weekly.

“We fully recognise Your Excellency’s commitment to restoring full economic activity in Anambra State; however, a balanced approach that upholds law and order while protecting legitimate commerce will yield longer-term gains,” Obegolu said.

Solution

As a solution, the chamber proposed an early phased reopening of the market, tied to firm commitments by traders and market leadership to operate fully on Mondays and all business days.

“We humbly urge Your Excellency to consider the early reopening of the market, contingent on verifiable commitments from market leadership and traders to fully operate on Mondays and every business day henceforth,” the chamber appealed.

The ACCI also called for structured engagement among government officials, security agencies, market unions, and private sector stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions, alongside temporary relief measures for affected traders.

Reaffirming its readiness to collaborate, the chamber expressed confidence in Governor Soludo’s leadership.

“We believe a resolution can be reached that safeguards both public order and the economic vitality of Onitsha Main Market,” the letter concluded.
