Adamawa state Deputy Governor, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta have been appointment as the Chairperson of the
States Boundary Committees of the Frontline states along Nigeria-Cameroon international border forum.
The states along Nigeria-Cameroon international border comprises of Adamawa, Borno,Taraba, Benue, Cross River and Akwa Ibom.
The appointment was made known in Yola, at the end of one-day workshop for the Creation of Nigeria’s Platform for Local Border Authorities Along Nigeria-Cameroon International boundary.
Professor Farauta said the forum would pave way for trans-border cooperation between Nigeria and Cameroon, serve collective security interest, boost the economy and prosperity of member states.
She said the two countries shares long history, that predicts the arrival of colonial administration, hence the need to unlock avenue for more opportunities for progress and development.
The Deputy Governor revealed that the states would leverage on ratified African Union Convention on cross border cooperation in Niamey, to boost Nigeria’s economic opportunities in border LGAs, state and the country.
” Out of the 2100kms of Nigeria-Cameroon boundary Adamawa, has shared about 600km stretch, spanning over nine (9) out of the 21 LGAs.
“On the Cameroonian side, the state is bordered with Far North, North and North West region, which has made the state major share holder in cross border project.”
Similarly, the Director General, National Boundary Commission, Adamu Adaji said Federal Government places great importance on the role of border local government authorities and traditional rulers in the attainment of peaceful co-existence between Nigeria and its proximate neighbours.
He explained that, their role would facilitates cross border cooperation and regional integration.
The DG added that the Niamey convention would ensure effective and integrated border management; combat cross border crime and transform border areas into catalysts for growth.
“let me inform you that both AU and ECOWAS underscored the importance of sub-regional engagements between composite regional and local authorities”. He said
Also, the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Service Wura-Ola Adepoju, expressed worry over, 712 km without clear demarcation of boundary between Adamawa and Cameroon in the six member states.
The Compyroller General said clear demarcation would eradicate starless person, who did not fall within Nigeria or Cameroon due to improper border demarcation.
