The Nigerian Armed Forces has promised to launch an inquiry into the gun duel between operatives of the Nigerian Military and the Nigerian Police Force in Adamawa State, which resulted in the death of Inspector Jacob Daniel, an officer on duty at the quarter guard, on November 21, 2023.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, expressed concern about the incident during a courtesy visit to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on Friday, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, underscoring the need for understanding its root cause.

He stated that any military personnel found to be at fault would face the consequences while stressing the importance of accountability within the Armed Forces.

To ensure a fair and transparent investigation, General Musa mentioned the establishment of a standing court martial specifically for addressing offenses related to the incident.

General Musa called for professionalism and collaboration among security agencies, highlighting the need for unity in achieving success in the fight against criminal elements.

The Chief of Defence Staff also indicated a review of training at lower levels to address any deficiencies and enhance cooperation between the military and police.

“I have already established a standing court martial for offenses. I have seen the roles and responsibilities of the court martial in the theater.

“Whatever it is that has happened, those that are found culpable will face the music,” he stressed.

The Dual Nature of the Nigerian Military

The Chief of Defence Staff also emphasized the dual nature of the military system where performance is rewarded and shortcomings are appropriately addressed.

“It is together that we can make it work. There is no single organization that can achieve success on its own. So, we are supposed to face the criminals, not to face each other.

“And for me, I feel it is very unprofessional for them to have resulted to the use of violence within themselves, but we’ll get to the bottom of this.

“At the end of it, it will make us better. I want to encourage all of us not to give in,” he said.

In response, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, assured General Musa of the commitment of the police to inter-agency collaboration.

Acknowledging the historical cooperation between the Nigerian Military and the Nigerian Police, Inspector-General Egbetokun pledged to strengthen the collaboration for the greater good of the people they serve.

He expressed satisfaction with the initiation of an inquiry into the Adamawa State incident, trusting that justice would prevail.

“The military and the police have a long history of cooperation and collaboration.

“I want to assure the Chief of Defence Staff that the police is committed to this collaboration, and we intend to strengthen the collaboration and cooperation between the police and the military for the good of the people,” he reiterated.

He expressed confidence in General Musa’s leadership and the pursuit of justice in the case.

The ongoing inquiry proves a collective effort to address internal security challenges and promote harmonious relations between the military and police in the interest of Nigerians.
