The Adamawa State Governor, Amadu Fintiri has directed the State Emergency Management Agency and other relevant Agencies that are responsible for managing the waterway to provide life jackets for boat owners for use by the passengers while on board.
Governor Fintiri went on condolence visit to the people of Gurin in Fufore Local Government Area of the State, where boat accident killed 11 people.
He directed the operators of waterways commercial transporters in the State to avoid overloading and ensure that their machines are in good condition in the event of heavy rain, wind or storm.
The Adamawa State Governor re-emphasized that the State Emergency Agency, Local Government Chairmen and Traditional rulers among others should ensure that policies, rule and regulations guiding water-ways businesses are strictly obeyed.
Governor Fintiri warned strongly that the government would not accept any carelessness that endanger the lives of its citizens.
He said; ‘’My administration is taking measures to put some safeties around the canoe businesses most especially during this rainy season that comes with heavy wind and storm.”
The Governor added that the government would provide all the necessary things to serve the people most especially those living in the riverine area to avoid such occurrences of boat mishap.
He advised the riverine residents to value their lives above their business, farms and not to allow themselves to be scrammed into the boat by the owners in the name of making more money or whatever reason.
It may be recalled that between Saturday and Monday, two boat accident killed over 20 people in the State.
