AFN To Select Athletes For African Championships In Lagos
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), has revealed that it would select athletes for the forthcoming African Senior Championships at the Second All Comers competition scheduled to hold at the Yaba College of Technology in Lagos this week.
Nigeria’s best athletes are expected to converge in Lagos on April 28th-29th for the second edition of AFN’s All Comers competition.
According to a statement by AFN Secretary General, Prince Adisa Adeniyi Beyioku, the two-day event “will serve as selection trials for home-based athletes for the 22nd African Senior Athletics Championships holding from June 8 to 12, 2022 in Mauritius.”
Beyioku reminded all the states, clubs and institutions intending to participate in the competition to confirm their entries upon arrival at the venue on Wednesday, April 27, 2022.
AFN Technical Director, Samuel Onikeku, explained that the AFN All Comers competition would also afford athletes wishing to participate in the championship the opportunity to achieve the qualification standard before the window closes on April 30, 2022.
“The bulk of the team that will represent Nigeria at the African Championships will be home-based athletes and this competition will afford the federation opportunity to select those who will go to Mauritius in June,” Onikeku said.
Nigeria hosted the last edition of the Championships in Asaba, Delta State in August 2018 with Team Nigeria finishing third on the medals table.
Nigeria had nine gold, five silver and six bronze medals behind Kenya (11, 6, 2) and South Africa (9, 14, 8),
