Over 500 Nigerian students have received training on eco-friendly environments as part of activities marking African Child Day.

A non-governmental organisation focusing on eco-friendly environment, Seed for Change Initiative organised a one-day programme across five secondary schools in Akure, Ondo State, Southwest Nigeria.

The students were given a sensitization lecture on the importance of tree planting and the role young people play in national development.

The Sustainability Manager, Barry Callebaut Nigeria, Mujeeb Oniyide urged students to explore opportunities available in climate and environment-related courses and involve in eco-friendly activities.

We are in an ever-changing world and it is important for you as youngsters to participate in activities that will make our world a safe place.”

Oniyide advised the children to prioritize their studies using available digital skills to contribute to the various challenges facing cocoa farmers in the country.

He further used the event to expatiate on ways the children can be agents of change as the world continues to face climate-related challenges, particularly among cocoa farmers.

In line with the Company’s commitment to an eco-friendly planet, over 150 trees were planted in five schools across Akure.

The students were implored to become tree-planting ambassadors in their respective schools by nurturing the trees to maturity. According to him, this will be a legacy they will continue to look back on and appreciate.

The Seed For Change initiative had earlier organized a speech contest programme for the students from selected schools on two topics: ‘The Future Of Cocoa And Our Planet’and ‘My Part In Shaping Sustainable Cocoa In Nigeria’.

The theme of this year’s African Child Day is ‘The Rights Of The Child In The Digital Environment‘.
