The Nigerian foreign policy think tank, Nigeria Institute of International Affairs, has called for full democratic dispensation in African countries where people can exercise civic duties and enjoy human rights.
The Director–General of the institute, Professor Egbosa Osaghae stated this during a one-day conference in Lagos insisting that democracy is a self-accessing system where people can enjoy its dividends.
According to Osaghae, Africa’s elections are important in democratizing functions; it helps the continent build and sustains effective democratic institutions among others.
Similarly, a member of the governing Council of the Institute, Professor Warisu Ali said the constitution and other guidelines of any country have to be defined and complied with.
Professor Alli said while elections can help African countries consolidate, deepen, and entrench democracy, it will also help improve leadership.
On the other hand, Professor Osaghae noted that democracy can pave way for sustained majoritarian power to detriment of minority in some cases.
Meanwhile, another participant from University of Jos, Professor Victor Adetulu mentioned that the civil society is fragmented, marginalised in the practice of democracy in Africa.
He urged the west Africa to encourage and stand up for Liberal democracy in Africa.
A member of the Institute of Peace and Conflict Resolution Abuja, Mr Andrew Gwaza noted that there is rising tension and insecurity in Africa’s democracy generally.
He advised African Leaders to pave way for others to participate in democracy.
