African Military Games 2024: Promoting Unity and Continental Co-operation

The African Military Games opens today Wednesday in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, with the military from about thirty African nations competing for medals in nineteen games.
Tagged AMGA Abuja 2024, is a regional sporting event that brings together military personnel from African countries with a clear mission to promote unity, co-operation and physical fitness.
The games are organised by the African Union (AU) and the Nigerian Armed Forces, is championed by Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa-an ardent sportsman, to foster camaraderie and esprit de corps among African militaries.
The first tournament was held in Nairobi, Kenya from the 17th to the 27th of April, 2002, making this year’s event the 2nd African Military Games (AMGA) ever to be held.
In addition to strengthening physical fitness and Sports development within the military, the Games aims to enhance regional co-operation and integration in the game of protecting the territorial boundaries of African nations.
The African Military Games also provides a veritable platform to showcase Nigeria’s capacity to host a myriad of international events which promote tourism and cultural exchanges amongst participating nations.
About thirty countries are participating in this year’s games including Algeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, South Africa and the host Nigeria.
Amongst these nations are countries that dominate sporting activities and represent Africa in world tournaments like South Africa, Algeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Ethiopia and Nigeria.
The 12 days event will see participating military teams compete for medals in the AMGA tournaments scheduled to kick-off from November 18 and run through November 30.
The competitions are in Football, Track and Field, Basketball, Volleyball, Swimming, Shooting, Boxing, Wrestling, Athletics, Obstacle Course Racing and many others.
All competitions will be held in the Nigerian military’s State-of-the-Art, international standard Sporting complex within its barracks, as well as at the main venue, the M.K.O. Abiola Sports Complex in Abuja.
These facilities have witnessed infrastructure upgrades, especially within the main sports venues and leisure areas, for the pleasure of participants and in the spirit of sportsmanship and African brotherhood.
Undoubtedly, the AMGA Abuja 2024 tournament will boost the local economy through tourism, showcase Nigeria’s hallmark culture and hospitality as well as facilitate interactions and networkings during the games and beyond.
While AMGA Abuja 2024 tournament will provide each participating country with the opportunity to win medals, it will also ultimately strengthen regional and continental unity and co-operation, all of which will in-turn enhance military-to-military engagements, showcase African sports talents and promote Nigeria’s soft power and diplomacy in Africa and beyond.
It is expected that the African Military Games 2024 in Abuja, will offer a unique platform for African militaries to unite, compete and co-operate.with one another.
Indeed, this is perhaps the most germane opportunity for African militaries to foster holistic integration in the game of protecting the continent’s territorial boundaries, encouraging unity and cultural exchanges that enunciate the bonds, commitment and loyalty of Africans to Africa.
