Agency reassures Nigerians of steps to address food insecurity
The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) reassures Nigerians of its steps to address food insecurity in the country. Dr Agnes Asagbra the Director- General (DG) of NBMA said this at a public enlightenment programme on Nigeria Biosafety System.
The programme which is aimed at addressing food insecurity in the country is in collaboration with RSA Global Investment Ltd. and other stakeholders in the biosafety industry.
Asagbra who was represented by Mrs Scholastica Bello, Head of Planning, Research, Statistics Department at NBMA, said that biotechnology is being used to address food insecurity, hunger and environmental issues in Nigeria.
“We deem it fit to observe our NBMA Act and the Cartagena Protocol on biosafety in general. We are very much aware that there are misleading information out there, and the place where you can get information about a product is from the manufacturer.
“Since NBMA is a competent authority on biosafety so it is in the best position to tell the public what biosafety is all about,” the DG said.
Chief Noah McDickson, Project Manager RSA Global Investment Ltd. said that indeed NBMA has been a warring partner on the issues of policies that protect humans from harmful biological agents.
McDickson commended NBMA for its role in ensuring food security in the country and by building the capacity of people and institutions on biosafety and biosecurity in Nigeria.
